Can a GPS be handheld?

I ain't that familiar with GPSs as I have never owned one myself.

1. I mainly travel by car, but I also walk and catch the bus/train quite a lot too. I want to know if I am able to put it in my bag - and if I get lost am I able to take it out and use it?

and

2. tell me: does a GPS have to be plugged into the car for it to work or does it only help it charge? The charger thingo in my car is broken. so am I able to charge it up at home and then use it when I am in the car?

3. I know that using GPS locating thing is free, but if i want to know extras such as: warning for school zones, restaurant/fastfood locations, petrol prices etc. - Do these require you to pay an extra fee

Thanks! : )

first, the "GPS" is the satellite... the GPS RECEIVER takes the data sent by the satellite and presents to the user a series of data bursts that the user must decode.

GPS receivers come in many flavors. They can be just the receiver "engine", the patch antenna, the multichannel receivers, and an output, usually a serial data connection. OR they can be vehicle navigation systems. Each system is made for the application, aircraft, car/ground or trekking by foot.

The receiver can be 100% self contained, or can be external power.

The "points of interest" are programmed into the receiver. Either by the map program, or user input. Some of the really high, top of the line, allow remote input. You pay for the service.

The basic GPS service is paid by you and me as taxes.
