When runners are at 1st & 3rd, why don't you see more double steals?
For example, the Rays are playing the Tribe right now and they had Carl Crawford at 1st and B.J. Upton at 3rd. Crawford takes off for 2nd base and the catcher's thow is not in time. Meanwhile, however, why doesn't Upton (a speedy runner) break from 3rd and try to steal home the moment the catcher throws the ball to 2nd base trying to get Crawford? You would think there would be plenty of time to steal home, given that there is 127.3 feet between home and 2nd. The ball has to travel from the catcher to the player covering 2nd, who then has to try and apply the tag, and then throw back to home. Is there something I'm missing here?
It's very easy to get faked out by that type of play. The time when you're most likely to try something, when you're down by a run or two or trying to break a tie, the catcher is unlikely to throw down to second, just in case such a play is on, it's better to give up the base then to give up the run.
Another possibility is being faked out. It wouldn't be incredibly difficult for the catcher to fake a throw to second and then catch the runner at 3rd when he breaks for home. Even if the runner isn't faked out it amounts to the same as the above situation.
And then of course if there are two outs, it's going to depend on the runners and the situation. If it's a relatively slow player and he doesn't get a great jump, they may try to throw him out. It really depends on how much of a chance they have of throwing him out and the possibility of a run scoring if they don't get him out.
There are many other factors but those are some of the most simplistic ones.
