What exactly is a Regulation Basketball?

I'm old; out of touch; poor memory; and never played too much basketball growing up. I want to buy ball; but am confused on i/net. I see 9", 8", 91/2". Also 28", 281/2", 29", 291/2", etc. I see leather, rubber, outdoor, indoor, both, pebbled, wide lines for easier control, etc. I want regulation size/wt. (NBA) that I will primarily use outdoor and be all surface use at a cheap price. So if someone steals it from me, no big deal. I grew up in Bklyn. and it was good prep. for 'Nam.

According to the NBA's Official Rules, Rule 1, Section II, Paragraph f, Subparagraph (1), The ball shall be an officially approved NBA ball between 7 1/2 and 8 1/2 pounds pressure.

So, what is an officially approved ball? Why, the official game ball manufactured by Spalding, of course. Orange in color, 29 1/2 inches in circumference, weighing 22 ounces (a size 7), this baby is a marvel of modern technology, and you can get one for less than 90 bucks on Amazon.

For your purposes, any ball meeting that description of size and weight will work for you. Anything made by Spalding that says 'Official Size' is right up your alley, but there are plenty of other manufacturers that make comparable products.
