Offensive, or just professionalism?
Yesterday, Brazilian striker Afonso Alves netted seven goals for Heerenveen in a 9-0 Dutch league victory over Heracles Almelo. A few minutes before the final whistle his coach invited him off the pitch, even though he had already made three substitutions, in order to allow fans to applaud him. Now, if you're 9-0 down, and your opponents decide they can finish the game with ten men, should you feel offended, or should you just shrug it off, because that's the just the job you chose?
Also, when Germany were like 11-0 up to San Marino, Jens Lehmann walked forward to take a penalty kick, but San Marino players convinced him not to. This may be different, because they're amateurs, but should Lehmann just have taken the penalty to add a national team goal to his resume, which already includes two Bundesliga goals?
xabiswife: well, it's always extra hard on players who are thrashed by the opposition if the keeper also scores, even if it is a penalty.
OFFENSIVE. PROFESSIONALISM IS TO FINISH THE GAME WITH 11 MEN AND TO BE MINDFUL OF THE COMPETITION. WINNING IS NOT ABOUT TRASHING THE OPPONENTS.
