Do you translate bible verses literally or do you take it with a grain of salt?
There are hundreds, if not thousands of bible verses that many Christians and non-Christians agree should not be taken literally in this day and age. One of my favorites is:
1 Cor 11:5,6 says,
“But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.”
Saying that a woman can't show her hair (or some interpret it as not being allowed to cut your hair). Obviously, we in the states don't abide by this anymore (although they obviously do in Islam)..
..so my question is, you shouldn't be able to pick and choose which verses are literal and which ones are just an interpretation, right? If we aren't to take verses literally, we can interpret them any way we want to, right?
It's true that scripture can be proven with other scripture, but most people are frightfully ignorant of how to read--much less study--the bible. Instead of thinking of it as one book, think of it as a library. It contains history, allegory, hyperbole, poetry, erotica, etc. Some admonition is contextual and historical; some is timeless.
Too many people pick and choose their favorite verses without really understanding why the verses are there. It's one reason Christians are often seen as hypocritical.
