If you only have a short trip, you should go to St. Andrews. You can get a train to Leuchars, about 6 miles from the Old Course. The Old Course is just one of the St Andrews' Trust courses - the Old, New, Eden, Strathtyrum, Balgrave and the Jubilee.
St Andrews is a wonderful town. It's a bit expensive for lodging - book now and if you are going by train, get a hotel near the courses. The courses are all right in the middle of the village and you can walk to them, usually. There are also B & Bs there but they may be out of town a bit.
I've played there for the last 4 summers. It's magic. Oh, to play the Old Course, you MUST have a handicap certificate, so don't forget to take yours!
